Celebrating World Ocean’s Day with Ecotourism Australia’s Certified Operators

This World Oceans Day, we celebrate the ocean’s wonder and the operators who are committed to preserving the vital life it supports.

Tourism offers a gateway to the ocean’s wonder – from reef dives to sea kayaking adventures, it shapes how we connect with marine environments. But this connection also comes with a duty of care. Sustainable tourism, as championed by our certified operators, ensures these experiences protect the ocean and the life it sustains.

The UN’s annual celebration of the ocean, World Ocean’s Day, exists to remind us that the ocean is our life source. The 2025 theme, Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us, calls on all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean so that future generations can have the chance to revel in its wonders.

In honour of World Oceans Day, we’re spotlighting three of our certified marine tourism operators who help protect the ocean while connecting travellers with its unforgettable wonders:

The Rangers Cottage

The Rangers Cottage

Just a stone’s throw away from a secluded arm of Sydney Harbour, The Ranger’s Cottage Manly offers a quiet beachside retreat nestled within a leafy bush reserve.

With funding support from Destination New South Wales, the harbourside cottage engaged with the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard to assess its business practices across the four pillars of sustainability -Sustainable Management, Environmental Impacts, Socio-economic Impacts, and Cultural Impacts—and gain valuable feedback.

In 2012 The Ranger’s Cottage Manly was opened by owner Felicity Stevens and is so named because it was originally inhabited by the local forest ranger over 100 years ago. The newly refurbished, fully self-contained, sunny Cottage is surrounded by iconic Australian flora and fauna and features homely interior design.

The Ranger’s Cottage is serious about showcasing their commitment to sustainability, with key initiatives including:

  • Generating their own power on site with solar
  • Buying renewable energy
  • Offering a compost bin to use
  • Collecting water in rainwater tanks
  • Using environmentally friendly cleaning products and personal care items that are refilled
  • Providing public-transport cards
  • Using reusable water and coffee cups

“We have been on the sustainability hosting journey for over 12 years and while we’ve implemented various sustainable practices, I wanted to see how we actually measure up and identify areas where we can improve. The Scorecard provides a clear benchmark for our efforts and helps us see where we can push further to minimise our impact on the environment,” said Felicity Stevens, Property Manager at The Ranger’s Cottage Manly

The Scorecard provided valuable insight into areas for improvement to ensure transparency and consistency in sustainable operating.

“The Scorecard emphasised the need to clearly communicate our sustainability efforts with guests, helping them understand what we do and why. In particular, it highlighted the importance of documenting our housekeeping guides and purchasing rules,” explains Felicity

Using the findings from the Scorecard, Felicity has already begun establishing new goals and priorities for long-term sustainability. For example, she plans create more channels to share with guests the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind their sustainable practices, along with the tangible impact of guests’ actions during their stay.

Felicity’s experience with the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard was so rewarding, it even motivated her to create her own website to inspire other holiday rental owners to adopt more sustainable practices.

“My website features a range of guides and explanations designed to help other make sustainable changes to their homes and how they operate for guests. I hope this resource makes it easier for others to embark on their own sustainability journeys,” Felicity says.

By completing the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard, The Ranger’s Cottage Manly have taken an important step in their commitment to sustainability. Thanks to the support of Destination New South Wales and our founding partner, Tourism Australia, The Ranger’s Cottage have been empowered to contribute to a greener future for the tourism industry.

Tourism Sustainability Certifications Alliance Launched by World’s Leading Travel & Tourism Certification Organisations

Tourism Sustainability Certifications Alliance Launched by World’s Leading Travel & Tourism Certification Organisations

The world’s leading travel & tourism Certification Organisations have announced the launch of the Tourism Sustainability Certifications Alliance (TSCA), a registered association dedicated to fostering a global tourism industry that thrives on sustainability.

With sustainability being embraced by all major industries, travel and tourism businesses are calling for simpler solutions to assist with sustainable management, attaining independent certification, and achieving continuous improvement.

At the same time, the popularity of sustainability is causing a proliferation of greenwashing and targeting travellers with unsubstantiated green claims.

TSCA Chairperson, Elissa Keenan said, “Our industry and travellers are demanding a transparent system of certification that can be trusted to promote the best in sustainable tourism and eliminate greenwashing.

The TSCA has been incorporated by its founding members as a collaborative certification platform for the tourism industry and to ensure that travellers make informed choices based on reliable sustainability standards.”

Under this new alliance, the TSCA has established a minimum sustainable tourism standard, which serves as the baseline that all members will align with. This standard, alongside independent auditing procedures ensures consistency and credibility in sustainability management.

The minimum standard will continue to serve all currently certified businesses and destinations while providing a unified system to meet the growing demand for independent certification of sustainable tourism management and performance.

The next steps for the TSCA will be to assist tourism businesses in satisfying the requirements of emerging consumer protection legislation, such as the upcoming EU Green Claims Directive introduced to eradicate greenwashing.

To provide greater access to certification for more tourism businesses, the TSCA will continue to streamline systems and refine and align reporting standards, criteria, benchmarks, and other requirements related to certification.

By growing the number of certified businesses, travel consumers will benefit from being able to purchase travel options with green credentials independently audited and supported by documented evidence.

TSCA Chairperson, Elissa Keenan added, “Collectively, TSCA members are responsible for certifying more than 19,000 travel and tourism enterprises, organisations, and destinations.

For over 30 years, the world’s most recognised travel brands and destinations have relied on us to provide independent and creditable certification of their sustainable practices.

The trust and recognition we have built over decades, with businesses and travellers alike, is the ongoing legacy the TSCA will build on to ensure that travel & tourism remains a positive force for communities, enterprises, and the environment.”

Botanic Apartments Warrnambool

Self-contained accommodation
Warrnambool, VIC

Botanic Apartments Warrnambool offers centrally located accommodation with self-contained and serviced apartments that emphasise sustainable practices.

Achieving an impressive 91 per cent on their Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard, the apartments demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing environmental impact. Key initiatives include highly insulated rooms with double glazing, in-room recycling facilities, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, solar power generation, and EV charging stations, making them a standout choice for eco-conscious travellers.

Owner-operator Linda Close first heard about the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard while attending the 2023 Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism Conference, where other businesses shared that the Scorecard was a valuable tool for assessing their sustainable practices.

Ecotourism Australia has over 30 years of experience in certifying tourism businesses and is a leader in the industry. The Scorecard is a pre-certification benchmarking tool, based on globally recognised sustainability criteria, that assesses your business practices and guides you as you begin your sustainability journey.

“I was confident in our sustainable operations, but I was looking to have our practices assessed and verified by a respected and independent organisation,” Linda explained.

Linda said, “We liked the evidence-based approach of the Scorecard and felt it provided a solid framework for assessing our sustainable practices. It encouraged us to consolidate our efforts, policies and initiatives in one place and to formalise some of our approaches into an over-arching Environmental Management Policy.”

She continued by saying, “We cater to both the corporate and leisure markets. We are increasingly hearing from our corporate and leisure guests alike that they value accommodation providers that have tangible sustainable processes in place.

Our corporate guests are looking to partner with other sustainable businesses for their accommodation needs. The Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard has allowed us to showcase our environmentally sound practices.”

Linda highly recommends the program to other businesses saying, “Participating in the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard was rewarding, and we recommend it to other businesses looking to assess their sustainability practices.”

Ecotourism Australia invites you to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 11 am AEST on Monday, 20 October 2025, hosted online via Zoom. This is an important opportunity for members to engage in the governance of our organisation and shape its future direction. At this year’s AGM, the Board of Ecotourism Australia will present a proposed new Constitution for member approval.

The proposed Constitution has been designed to:
  • Introduce a balanced structure of member-elected Directors (maximum 5) and Board-appointed Directors (maximum 4)
  • Update Director terms from 2 years to 3 years, with a maximum of two terms (6 years total)
  • Meet current regulatory requirements for a Company Limited by Guarantee
  • Be modernised and contemporary to meet Ecotourism Australia’s strategic imperatives and our objectives
  • Provide a streamlined and concise governance framework.

As required under the Corporations Act 2001, the new Constitution must be formally adopted by members through a special resolution at the AGM. This means that at least 75% of members present and voting will need to support the resolution for it to pass. Your vote is therefore important in shaping the future governance of Ecotourism Australia. The draft Constitution is available for download below.

We have an Expression of Interest (EOI) for Directors for the Ecotourism Australia board. Please note that while EOIs will be open, no new Directors will be appointed before the AGM.

Your participation is vital to ensure our governance reflects the strength, professionalism and sustainability goals of our membership.

Thank you for your continued support of Ecotourism Australia. We look forward to your involvement at the AGM.
