Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Camden Haven region, The Fernery – Diamond Waters Treehouse Retreat stands as a shining example of sustainable management and environmental responsibility with luxurious accommodations like enchanting “Treehouses” and the tranquil “Fernery,” a contemporary wedding and events center built in 2019.
Motivated by their dedication to sustainability, owners Peter and Kerry took steps to further enhance their sustainable initiatives by completing the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard. Understanding the importance of aligning their new venture, The Fernery, with their established Advanced Ecotourism and Climate Action Business certified Diamond Waters Treehouse Retreat, they aimed to continuously improve and promote a cohesive approach to interpretation, client communication, and cultural sensitivity.
“Strive 4 Sustainability provided us with a brilliant, value for money, self-assessment tool with a subsequent report from Ecotourism Australia to help identify opportunities and improvement strategies for ‘The Fernery’ prior to fully immersing this new business into our overall Accreditation program. We developed an Action Plan during the self-assessment process, particularly for Cultural improvement that we are excited about, and we will fully implement this plan by the end of the year.”
Through the Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard, the owners acknowledge the significance of cultural sustainability and proactively seeking opportunities to promote local Indigenous arts and events.
“We are already drafting our Acknowledgement of Country with Aboriginal input for our website and signage, we are planning a welcome totem with Indigenous art for our gardens, one of our new health and wellbeing contractors, Tahlia from Healwell is Indigenous and is bringing strong cultural ties to our land. Together with a local Bripai didgeridoo player she is leading a meditation session for an upcoming workshop. These are exciting developments.”
With a resolute dedication to accessibility and community development, The Fernery not only actively supports local community groups but also adheres to accessibility standards, playing a crucial role in boosting the visitor economy.
Utilising impactful marketing platforms, they effectively showcase their eco-friendly design, waste management, wildlife protection, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and reforestation initiatives. These endeavors demonstrate their active effort to reduce their environmental footprint and foster a regenerative ecosystem.
